Gurudev, people tend to consult Vastushastra (the ancient Indian science of space and architecture) before starting the construction of a building or a new home. What is the relevance of these practices in the times of today?

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar:
See, there are many different shastras (body of science or knowledge) and not just one. Different methods and approaches are written and prescribed in different scriptures.
So it is okay to consult Vastushastra before you construct a new home. But if there is some dosha (here meaning an anomaly in the land or the type of construction), simply chant Om Namaha Shivaya. Chanting this one mantra is enough to remove any negativity and any type of problems you may face.
You know, being in devotion removes all obstacles in one’s way. By being sincere in your Seva, Sadhana and Satsang, all problems get removed, and negativity disappears.
This is why mantras like Om Namaha Shivaya and the Mahamrityunjaya Mantra are so great. They have the power to remove all your problems and any negativity that may come your way.

Q: Gurudev, When was the last time you got angry at someone?

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar:
I don’t even remember! Suppose you are angry at somebody, don’t start regretting it. Regret makes you become angry once again.
For me, I can count on my fingers the number of times I have gotten angry. It is not in my nature.
I have not done anything special not to get angry. Somehow I have been made this way. I can’t take any credit for it. I have never said a single bad word to anybody all these years. It never has happened. I have never blamed, cursed or said any bad word to anybody.

Q: Gurudev, What is the meaning of life?

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar:
One who knows will not tell, and one who tells does not know! This is because the very question is like a vehicle for you to travel on. When you have to traverse the journey of your life, the wise man will not take your vehicle away from you, and say, ‘Now you go'.

This question, ‘What is the meaning of life’, is very important and very valuable. You should keep asking it again and again. Then all that is trivial, irrelevant, and unnecessary will simply fall away from life.

Gurudev, in the Bhakti Sutras, you have said that all good things have a tax. Do I have to pay for devotion too?

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar:
Ego is the tax for devotion.
